how stupid is

if a person knew a felon that got caught with guns and the person told the court that the guns belonged to him what could happen to that person

It depends on many factors -- whether he was telling the truth, whether he is also a felon, whether he made this statement under penalty of perjury, whether he made it in an interview with law enforcement, whether the case against the felon could have been affected by his statement, etc. This person might be in serious trouble or no trouble at all depending upon these additional factors.

Reagardless of what he said, though, he probably didn't help his felon friend. Possession of a firearm by a felon is a crime, and possession is not the same thing as ownership. Even if the friend really did own the guns, if they were in a felon's posession then the felon is still guilty.
