suiing the poilice

the police shot and killed my dog who was on a chain in my back yard. what can i do about it?

California has a government torts claims act, that allows you to file a claim for compensation, as long as that claim is filed within 6 months of the incident. The police department can additionally give you the forms necessary to make a complaint.

Yes, people have successfully sued the police for shooting their dogs. Consult an attorney in your area experienced in police misconduct litigation. Remember you only have a limited time in which to sue.

The answer depends upon why they did it. For example, if they were trying to rescue someone in danger and the dog was threatening and blocking them then the law will be on their side. If they just arbitrarily shot him it will be on yours.
