Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
surrendering physical evidence in murder investigation
If a letter, relevent to the death of a victim, is mailed to a third party (by the victim) to whom does the 3rd party give it? Can they give it to the lawyer of the murder suspect (the suspect and the 3rd party are friends). Or do they have to give it to the investigating officer?

Th evidence is handed to the office of the district attorney, which In turn has a duty to disclose the letter to the defense. In abundance of caution it is prudent to also supply the copy to the defense attorney.
