Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Tax Evasion and Identity Theft

Recently I was charged with Tax Evasion and Identity Theft. This all was due to the fact that I am not from this country, but I entered this country legally 20 years ago. When I arrived I thought that I was doing the right thing by obtaining a social security number at the social security office. I worked for years with this social security. I married a US citizen shortly after I arrived and had a son. My son's mother never encouraged me to get my citizenship. I never worried about it because I thought that my marriage to her made me a citizen. I separated from my wife with my son and relocated to Indiana. I worked for a County Agency for almost 3 years with this social security number. I lost my job there, had to file bankruptcy on my landlord, who just happened to have been the one to fire me. My landlord is also a retired police officer, who was good friends with his attorney/City Public Safety Director of the Police/Fire Dept. Since they lost the case, they dug into my personal life and realized that my social security number was not mine and that I was not a citizen. Well, I did not know that the SS number was not mine, let alone a womans. As I stated I thought that I WAS a citizen by marriage. So I was charged.

I am afraid that I do not understand. You say that you obtained a Social Security Number through the Social Security Administration, but that it is no good? If the SSN is not valid, you could also be facing possible deportation. Please call at (800) 313-9619 to further explain your situation.
