Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Teenager on Probation
I have a 16 yr old on probation-Felony of a controlled substance, Vicodin. He will be 17 in less than 2 months. The courts are telling me he is required to be in school. He was expelled from his High School so it would be a continuation school. He wants and can get his GED at 17. (I read the CA Dept. of Ed rules). He has a good, full time job lined up for the summer. Can they force us to keep him in school at this time?

Re: Teenager on Probation
The general rule is that any violation of the terms of probation can result in the person being sent to jail or prison. In this case perhaps juvenile hall or the California Youth Authority. The best approach is to contact his probation officer and get permission for him to get his ged and work full time. He should also go to college and obtain additional education. Retaining an attorney to assist in this would be advisable.
