Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Is a threat towards property covered under CPC 422?
If in an internet chat room someone says that they will damage my motorcycle with a bat, have they committed a crime under CPC 422 (the wording mentions only crimes that result in death or great bodily injury)? If not, are there any crimes that they have committed under different laws, and how likely is it that they will be prosecuted if I reported this?
This was a one time occurence, and may have been a joke. I don't know this person and they certainly don't know me. What is my best course of action?
Thanks and I appreciate the site!

most likly not, but perhaps destruction to property

Your bike is an inanimate object and cannot feel apprehension or fear in response to a threat of physical violence. For that reason, it is my best guess that 1) it's unlikely that they would be prosecuted, the authorities would laugh at you or otherwise blow you off; and 2) your best course of action is to hit Delete or Alt-F4.
