Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Ticketed for petty theft under California 484/488PC
I was ticketed by police for petty theft under California 484/488 PC.
I 'm booked too and 'm asked to appear before court on 7/18.Value
of item is 240$.
It is charged as "petty theft". I 'm not a US citizen and I 'm on work
-permit. I went thru the punishment for petty theft on web. It is said that 1000$ fine or jail for 6 months or both as per CA law.
I never done this before neither in US or elsewhere. what is the possible punishment if i plead guilty? I need to avoid going to jail to save my job and future. I had never been nor convicted by court prior. What do I need to do, to get just fined as the punishment. The
merchant told me that I would be JUST FINED. I want an expert opinion

Re: Ticketed for petty theft under California 484/488PC
If the appearance on July 18, 2000, is your first appearance. The purpose is for the court to advise you of the charges against, and for you to enter a guilty plea. You should enter a not guilty plea. The court will then schedule a court appearance for a later time. At that court appearance you wil have the opportunity to discuss the case with the district attorney and get an indicated sentence from the the court.
You really need to be represented by an attorney. The attorney can review the facts of your case in detail and advise you of possible defenses. The sentence in this case can have a significant affect on any future case of petty theft. If you are sentenced to only one day in jail can result in being charged with a felony.
