what do the letters in front of a violation mean ie bf, bm, sc?

On a traffic citation, usually nothing at all.

Sometimes the first two letters of a case number stand for the branch court and case type in a large county, for example SCxxxxxx in Los Angeles county would denote a civil case filed in Santa Monica.
