Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

First time misdemeanor. My record is clean. Nothing bad at all. The charge is the false report to peace officer. I don't want to go to jail. Is it possible to pay a fine?

It may not be possible to just pay a fine but it may be possible to avoid jail. What you need is a good lawyer. I don't know where you are in the proceedings but if you don't already have a lawyer you should hire one immediately. Most criminal defense attorneys will give you an initial consultation for free. You might interview a couple if you have time and find the best fit. Your local bar association may be able to give you a referral if you don't know any criminal defense attorney or perhaps one of your friends may know a criminal defense attorney. There are plenty of us on line.

For a first offense such as this, jail usually isn't imposed. It will depend on the facts and circumstances of your case, what they can actually prove against you and what your attorney can work out on your behalf.

Don't be focused on the short term punishment. Yes, that's important, but you're facing a crime of moral turpitude/dishonesty that can have a tremendous impact on your future, employment, etc.

Get a lawyer. Look for an attorney that focuses on criminal defense and who routinely practices in the courthouse where your case will be heard.

I would try to get the charge dismissed as its a conviction for a crime of moral turpitude, and will have negative consequences for your future. Try to find an experienced attorney who will fight to get the charge dropped. I wish you well......David
