Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

travel abroad while waiting possible citation

One week ago I was involved in a car accident without causing injuries. Even though I had insurance and no reason to flee, I panicked and left. But I called 911 45 minutes later to report what happened. Now I am waiting to see if the district attorney is going to press charges against me or not. But before the accident I had bought plane tickets to fly to a foreign country, where I am suppossed to spend 6 months working. Now my question is this : can I get in legal trouble if the D.A.'s letter arrives when I am not here ? What can I do ? Thanks a lot.

Leaving without "fleeing"

First, get counsel in the area where thishappened. A good lawyer should be able to talk to the D.A. and hopefully have them notfile the case. The lawyer will probably allowyou to leave since, at worst, you could do theplea by mail if you absolutely had to.My estimate is that the chances are good to have no charges filed. Get the lawyer right away.
