Kind of like the old Henny Youngman joke, isn't it. "My doctor said I had six months to live. I told him I couldn't pay my bill, he gave me another six months." While a criminal defense attorney can certainly postpone a case for a short time, or even a long time, normally a criminal defense lawyer won't appear in court for you at all until paid up front and in full, because criminal defendants are poor credit risks and the lawyer could get stuck defending the case otherwise.
