Identity theft is very common in California, and there are many cases where someone arrested for a crime uses another person's identity. A colleague of mine represented a client whose ID was stolen by a person who stole a car and was sentenced to state prison. Of course, the thief didn't report to his parole officer when he was released from prison, so the ID theft victim was arrested on a parolee-at-large warrant and spent three weeks in San Quentin before it got straightened out!

Fortunately, the California Attorney General has an Identity Theft Registry for people in your situation. It is available 24/7 to law enforcement and anyone else you designate, like potential employers. When you go through the border again, you can show your documents and ask the border agents to check the registry.

Your minute order is the first step. Check the Attorney General's website at the link below for more information on getting included in the registry.
