on a violation of probation, isn't the judge suppose to tell you how long he is going to keep you in custody

If you are arrested for a violation of felony probation, the judge can keep you in jail until sentencing.

When you are sentenced, the judge can put you back on probation, possibly with even more jail time, or revoke your probation and impose anything up to the maximum for the offense that got you on probation in the first place.
