In layman's terms, a directed verdict is a Motion by counsel at trial to request judgment by court, that is taking away the case from the jury. Preponderence of the Evidence is that evidence of of party is stronger than the other side. Judicial Notice is when you ask the Court to acknowledge certain certfieid documents that are official i.e. parts of the file, that a certain day is Monday, correct records from the Secretary of State. Such definitions are usually contained in the Code of Civil Procedure and Evidence Code.
