Will an arrest with no conviction or charges pressed show up on a background record check in California

It will certainly show up on the California Department of Justice's records known as your "rap sheet." There are many private databases in existence that may pick it up, too, but you can't know which of them have it and which of them don't. Your arrest (not followed by a criminal prosecution) can be reduced to a "detention only," which is much better than "an arrest."
