defamation of character

i was fired for steeling. i said ''i did it'' i paid back the money and i was fired. now a lady that i worked with that knows nothing of the situation, it was conferdetal. told her husband and now he came to my new job and told my boss lies about me..made it bigger and worse than what it was. he does not know anything about what happened and now is trying to get me fired from my new job..can he do that? do i have any rights?

If the statements this gentleman is making are true, there is no case for defamation.

Conversely, if he is making statements that are untrue, it appears that you would have a case for libel per se, which is a category of defamation.

I recommend you see a lawyer in your neighborhood who can assess the particular facts of your case.

You must have a very good boss, or you must be doing very a good job, or both, to still have your job given what he knows about you. Keep up the good work.

It's hard to say what would come of a court case against the other fellow, especially since you have so far not suffered any loss or damages.
