Legal Question in Discrimination Law in California
Gender Discrimination during hiring process, do I have a case?
I interviewed with a contractor firm for employment with one of their clients. During the interview, two recruiters approved of my technical skill level. As the interview ended, one recruiter was concerned about my fit,'' since the department was all male. The second recruiter, uncomfortable with this, said I was the most qualified candidate. The recruiter concerned with my fit asked about some proprietary software I lacked experience with. Later, I learned this single factor bumped me from their star for this position. The other candidates failed on the interviews technical component and the recruiter wanted me to talk to the client. He again questioned my ability to fit in due to demographics, but had faith in my technical skills. I passed the clients first interview, then interviewed in person. The onsite interview went well, and the client enjoyed interviewing a technically skilled woman. This client had been sent one other woman in the two years working with the contractor. If my gender held me back from the first interview, was that illegal? The salary offered is very low, even in the tough technical market. If this is due to my gender, where do I stand?

It sounds as if you were offered the job. It would appear that the recruiter, and not the company, was dicriminating.
Regarding the pay, there is a general requirement of equal work for equal pay. You would need to show that others (male) starting employees for the same or similar position were offered more.
Would probably need more facts to give a more difinitive answer.
