Legal Question in DUI Law in California

Buying Alcohol at night

Some friends and I tried to buy beer at a 7-11. we are all over 21, but the store employee said that the state wont allow them to sell alcohol between the hours of 2am and 6am. I searched around for documentation of this law but couldn't find it. please confirm or point me in the right direction.
