How would I handle an interview with a dishonest witness?

You should not be handling any interview with any witness. You should hire an attorney who will in turn have an investigator gather the necessary interview, dishonest or otherwise. Then, at trial, your attorney should have other evidence with which to impeach this witness thereby destroying his credibility. If you cannot afford an attorney, ask for the public defender. They have their own investigators.
