Legal Question in DUI Law in California

I hired a lawyer to fight a dui case for me and he lost. He did not provide great service and was never there to answer questions for me, I was unsatisfied with his service. We never signed a legal document. Am I obligated by the law to pay for his services? Can he sue me for this?

Need more facts...Is this a private attorney? a public defender. Was there ever an engagement letter or e mails concerning the representation?

This gratuitous response does not create an attorney client relationship. The advice provided herein is generic, may not apply to your circumstances and is not to be relied upon in your actions. An attorney client relationship is created only upon execution of an engagement letter or retainer agreement hiring me or my firm.
