Legal Question in DUI Law in California
Orange County CA DUI 1st Offense
Boyfriend rec'd a DUI this last wknd; Police tell him ''not to worry'' you only receive a slap on the wrist. I find this hard to believe unless the laws are completely different from LA County. What are we looking at and should we hire an atty or does the cost out weigh the penalty on a first convict? Thanks.

He should hire an attorney quickly. Even a first DUI conviction will carry significant penalties (fines, probation, community service, potential jail time depending on the facts, license suspension etc...)
There are no differences in the substantive law between LA and OC county. The laws are statewide. DUI's are a complicated and technical area of law and your boyfriend should hire a competent attorney quickly.

Re: Orange County CA DUI 1st Offense
I cannot provide an opinion about your specific facts without being your attorney - ethical constraints. But I can speak in general. A 1st DUI offense may result in license suspension, large fine, community service, and other court-imposed consequences. The code provides for the jail -- the DA usually does not seek this unless there is some aggravating circumstances. I always recommend an attorney because I have seen over the years that attorneys get the best outcomes. Feel free to consult our site for additional DUI info: http://www.keglawyers.com.
Good luck.
