Legal Question in DUI Law in California
In need of very old records to obtain driver's license.
In 1991 I completed an 18 month dui course but did not get my license back because I had too many fines to pay. Last year I was in prison so now I am able to get my license but when I went to the DMV they told me that I needed to present proof of completion of the 18 month dui course. I then went to the county to retrieve my records and after a long drawn out process by the women in that office, they finally have told me that not only do they not have a copy of that certificate of completion, but they don't even have any record of me being sentanced to that course at all. All that they have is a copy of the complaint filed against me and my dmv print out. Now what? Who can I get these records from? Please help!

Contact the instructor of the class and ask if attendance records were kept and if the instructor remembers you being in class. You should obtain checks or receipts of payment for the class that would also help. If you know any of the others that took the class try to find that person and ask if they remember you.
Check the court file for your case. Usually the court requires a copy of the proof of completion of the course. This document is placed in the court file. Even a note written by the court clerk that proof of completion was received by the court could be helpful in convincing the DMV that you completed the course.
Go to the DmV and request a copy of your license history. This may contain a reference to your completion of the course.
Check with the attorney that represented you and if for your file to be checked for a copy of any document that states you completed the cours.
