Legal Question in Education Law in California

education

Hi There,

I got married in DEC 2006 and am on H4 status.

I did LLB from UNIVERSITY LAW COLLEGE, Bangalore (India).

I want to know what are the prospects and scope of Indian Law degree in US.

Am I eligible to work under any attorney now?

What do you think is the best way to have my Indian Law Degree recognized in US-

a) To prepare for bar exam of California or New York or

b) To be a continuing student at some law schools in Texas itself?

I appreciate your time and advice.

Thanks a lot.

Re: education

Hello:

You have actually asked a complicated immigration vs educational question.

1. Family members (you are not family) of H-1 B workers are admitted tothe US in the H-4 category but cannot work in that capacity. H-4 family may undertake studies. In order that you can work, you need USCIS permission through the approval of a change in status application to a non-immigrant category permitting employment.

As far as the "transferrability" of a foreign country law degree, each State in the US may have differing rules as to ability to practice. California for example, only allows other states attorneys to start up practice without passing a Bar exam after 5 years of licensure in the other state. I am not aware of any similar rule for Indian reciprocity.

Good luck,

Sincerely,

Mark Geyer
