Where can I find out if an individual, by name, is a legitimate licensed practicing elder law attorney, and what,if any law firm, he or she may be associated with ?

You can find attorneys licensed to practice law in California (and their contact information) at "www.calsb.org" using the "member search" function. This will not, however, tell you if he or she is competent in elder law.

Go to www.calbar.org and you can check to see if the individual is licensed to practice law in California (or you can call the California State Bar office in SF or LA). It will not indicate what kind of law they practice. Generally, an attorney can practice any kind of law, but can only advertise themselves as a "Specialist" in a particular area of law by meeting certain minimum criteria.
