Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Child Actors on Tour

I run a for-profit company that does national tours of musical theater. We are doing a tour which involves 8 child actors.

Are we required to take the parents of the actors along with us on the tour? I can only find 1 state law that says we need too, and it just so happens to be the state which we are based out of (Indiana).

Since a majority of the tour will take place outside of Indiana, I was unsure of which state law we need to follow for this?

Thanks so much!

Re: Child Actors on Tour

This requires some research for each state involved. I know that most states have very strict requirements about this kind of thing. In California, depending on the age of the child, a parent or legal guardian must be on-site while the child is working. I'd find it hard to believe that any state doesn't have a similar rule.

Also, you'll probably be required to comply with a number of other child-labor laws, including providing a teacher for the kids, etc.

You should hire a lawyer to research this, and advise you. Penalties for noncompliance can be severe.
