How do I get out of a management contract?
A few years ago when I was new in the business, I signed a five year management contract as a writer/director and producer. I had no idea what I was doing at the time. The manager was also my employer, so I was wondering if that covered any kind of conflict of interest. He hasn't gotten me any paid work or leads in the last two years. Is there a simple way to get out of this contract? Do I have any rights, or am I just screwed for the next few years?

Generally, there are no prohibitions on Managers having conflicts of interest. In fact, Managers are almost totally unregulated.
You probably should have a lawyer take a quick look at the contract you signed, and a brief interview with you to discuss all of the facts. There may be a way to break the contract, but without knowing more detail, I couldn't say for sure.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the manager was also my employer." Do you mean you were a regular paid employee in some other capacity?
Without seeing the contract, it would be hard to say what your options are. Contracts may contain whatever agreements the parties are willing to make so there are no hard and fast rules about what they say or don't say.
Generally, a management contract requires that you see some benefit within a certain period of time (typically 90 days) or it can be canceled. But many of these contracts are very one-sided and don't require much of the manager.
If you want to get out of the contract, it would be worth your while to consult with a competent entertainment attorney and have him review your contract. He could then give you advice based on what it actually says.
