Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California
One-sheet contract
Im an aspiring singer/songwriter & was contacted by a man who said I was a superstar and wanted to help me ''develop my gift. '' Our first meeting was set to be w/a manager who could get me signed to a label.
Before the meeting he said we needed to meet face-to-face to discuss some things. Here, he says we need to prepare a ''one-sheet'' because ''there always has to be papers involved before anything else happens.''
At first he said it was solely to show show he helping develop me. But when we arrived @ Kinkos, he added 5.) and 6). By the time it was drafted, we only had 5 min before the meeting. He rushed me over to a notary & said I had to sign it. I told him I needed to call my father for advice, but he said there was no time.
So, w/out time to think & reason, I signed it. But two days later, I'm second guessing everything. I've also had other, more credited producers/engineers since, interested in working w/me but I'm scared to respond. What are the ramifications of signing it? Limitations? is 20 pts normal for someone in his position to take? Was I under duress? The year(2008) isn't in the contract-is it invalid?

Re: One-sheet contract
You probably were not under duress, but even if you were, how can you prove it? It's your word against the other guy?
Based on what you say, you KNEW you shouldn't sign it, but you did so anyway. You were under PRESSURE... you succumbed, and now you're bound by the contract you made.
Good news is a good lawyer can probably get you out of the deal... but you should act quickly.
20% isn't unusual for a manager, but you could have done better.
