Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Two part question, I'm writing a play, it is a sequel(ish) to an already written play (not written by me) what precautions should I take so I do not get a cease and desist letter from the estate of the play I�m using? And Second question can I use a character's name from other piece of work in my play. Where are the lines between parody and plagiarism?
