Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Protect a television show idea and treatment

I have written a treatment for a television show I am trying to pitch. The

treatment is registered with the WGA and we are about to start finding writers

for scripts. Since the show is not sold yet I want to make sure the writers I'm

working with, who are probably much more educated on this than I am, do

not steal the idea or make slight changes and call it their own. what should I

do to protect myself and where can I find free legal forms that I might need

the writers to sign? Any help--name removed--be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

William Maurer

Re: Protect a television show idea and treatment

The WGA does not afford you much protection as an individual. Copyrighting the treatment is the next step and then you need to enter into an agreement with the other writers. In this situation a free form is very risky. If this project something that you really feel has value you should have an attorney draft it. Otherwise you will regret it in the future...I see it happen all the time.

Re: Protect a television show idea and treatment

WGA registration, a good start. Next, register w/ copyright.gov . Avoid "free legal forms." In the event of serious interest consult a lawyer in person.
