Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California
Recoding Contract
I am recording my first solo CD to be released next year. I am hiring some musicians to record some of the instruments that I do not play. If I pay them for their performance do I have to pay them for any residuals that I may receive from sales or radio play etc.
I need contracts between me and musicians that I hire, where can I get these contracts, or who can I get to write these contracts.

Re: Recoding Contract
I do recording contracts and have been involved in entertainment since 1965. I charge by the hour or on a percentage if you can't afford legal fees up front. I take it this is not an AFM record. You will need a release for each player. If you want to shop your cd to a major they only deal with lawyers and agents. Musicians who submit on their own have their stuff returned or just tossed. I have worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. I am in Notre Dame country due to family illness matters but I commute. Good luck.
Re: Recording Contract
Thank you for your inquiry.
The terms of your relationship with studio artists is indeed negotiable and will likely be governed by contract. That is to say that you can obtain their A&R services as a "work for hire" and thereefore you can maintain ownership of all copyrights in the musical work.
