Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California
Using a Stage Name - Promotion Limits
Hi,
Thanks for taking the time to review my question. I am developing a production company for film/video. I am forming a corporation. I understand that all legal documentation, accounts, contracts and so forth must contain my legally identifiable name. That is straightforward. I wish to use a “stage” name for as many matters as possible: scripts I have credit on, films I direct, parts that I act in, etc. From what I understand, I don't think that putting a stage name on such examples is problematic. But, what I am wondering is, what are the limits of doing business under a stage name that I simply adopt and start using, which is not identified legally? Can I advertise for actors to join me in a project using this name? Can I put this name on my business card which has the name of my corporation? I guess my concern is mainly around o of a business which legally denotes my real name, not the stage name. Help is greatly appreciated. I will need expertise in legal entertainment on a more ongoing basis in future.

Re: Using a Stage Name - Promotion Limits
Actors and artists routinely use stage names in promotions but in legal documents you will have to use your legal name. I suggest that you trademark the stage name so that you have added protection. This is not a problem if done correctly.
