Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California
I'm thinking of writing a novel based on copyrighted characters. I am an unpublished writer. The characters are from a very popular book and film trilogy. Should I ask for permission before I write it, or just write it and then attempt to secure rights? Thank you.

Last time you asked this question you were also "thinking of writing a novel." That was a couple of weeks ago. How many pages did you write since then? Or are you still "thinking"?
Use your own original characters. Then you own the rights.
Good luck with your thinking.

Get permission. If you don't it's likely your work will be for naught, since you won't be able to get your book published.
Better still, write something original.
