Is it possible to trade mark a name as an artist. Say the name you come up with is "Lady Gaga" great name right, is it possible to own that name, legally? Similarly, that is, the how it is possible to own the name Exxon for a gas company. I may be sitting down with some record company suits to talk contracts and I want to be sure that All that all my intellectual assets that can be tied down are nice and snug.

Yes, what you are talking about are trademarks. You can secure trademarks in connection with goods or services...for example, with recorded music. It is wise to secure your intellectual property before entering into a deal.
