Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

ward of the court

A record producer/music publisher has interest in my minor daughter. He wants to record her. He wants me to sign something that would make her a ward of the court. Is this really necessary in entertainment? I do not want to sign off my parental rights! I do not have any contracts yet.

Re: ward of the court

This sounds very fishy to me. I have never heard of anything like this in a ligitament recording deal. Do not sign anything and do not allow your daughter to sign anything until you have had a lawyer review it. This is the safest way to make sure no one takes advantage of you or your daughter. I handle a lot of entertainment law all over the state, and I have been doing this for over a decade. If you still need help or need someone to review a potential contract please feel free to contact my office by email at [email protected] or toll free at 877-546-9918. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck if I don't hear from you.

Sincerely,

John Hayes, Esq.

Re: ward of the court

This does not sound right to me. Maybe the papers are actually emancipation papers which would make you minor an adult in the laws eyes, but it sounds to me like maybe this person might want to become the legal gaurdian of your child and then somehow take the money if you know what I mean.
