Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California

Web business questions

I have a web based business that I will be taking peoples photos and creating a DVD Slideshow with music. Am I allowed to use any music that I can purchase on line? I will not be mass producing these DVD's. 1-3 copies will be made for the viewing of the client with their photos. I am in the processing my website and will be finishing up today. I hope to recieve an answer soon. Thank you for your help!

Music must be licensed... it's not enough to simply purchase it on-line... you've got to get formal, written permission from 2 parties... the record company and the music publisher. (there are actually 2 different copyrights involved here).

I recently wrote a short article about this... http://firemark.com/2007/11/17/music-basics-for-film-and-video-productions/

The other solution is to use so-called "royalty free music" (google search for that phrase).

This involves paying a one-time license fee (typically fairly small) for an all-inclusive license to use the material in your projects.

Also... have a look at freeplaymusic.com
