Legal Question in Entertainment Law in California
I am currently working as an TV editor but I am trying to make my side Media company started. I am currently buying a home in Los Angeles County and will be partnering up with my future wife to make this Media company successful. I really just would love a website, books or any avenue to help me just get a clearer picture of what is in store for me when the business starts. We plan to have a "big brother" company and start LLC for each projects we do.
If you have any advice please let me know. If getting my own legal guy for the company is the solution I will do it but I really feel like I wouldn't need a legal team just yet and I can do all the contracts and legal stuff but just run it by a accountant before executing the plan.
Let me know your thoughts?
1 Answer from Attorneys
As a starting point, I would recommend that you create a business plan. You can find many books at a local library on how to create such a plan. The plan will give you a better understanding of the overall cost along with what you would need to open your door and to keep it open. Also it will give you a good idea of when you should leave if the ship is sinking, before it brings your down with it.
Deciding whether to hire an attorney will depend on how informed you are with the nature of your business. I would always advice that you get an attorney at least to review your contracts, so you are more aware with the possible legal liabilities involved and potentially avoid them if you can. An accountant may understand the finances behind your business, but likely could not give you legal advice as to the possible legal liabilities and solutions (example: intellectual property ownership, employment contracts, independent contractor agreements, partnership or llc agreements etc.) Should you have additional questions, feel free to contact me or a business attorney in your area.
