498 Dowry Harresment

Hi My wife left for India and filed for divorce in a family court.Her family ask me to come down to India and do a mutual divorce.As soon as I reached there her attorney told me that ''If you do not agree for mutual divorce with our defined contract we will put you in jail under 498 A''. So I immediately left for USA.Now they are telling me that to come back again to go for mutual divorce.My question is ''Can I ask them to give me a legal document stating that I have not harressed my wife for dowry'' ? In other words what document should I ask them by which they can not put me in jail using 498 A.Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

That is a question that would have to be answered under India law. You may be able to obtain a no-fault divorce in California, which would be much easier. Good Luck, Pat McCrary
