Legal Question in Family Law in California

What do you do if your 4 year old cousin is going to die?

On Tuesday my 4 year old cousin went into the hospital because he had gotten shot by a drive by shooting and he is now on life support. The doctors told his parents that he may not live much longer and I just got the call early yesterday morning before my class had started at 9 am about him being in the hospital. I didn't even go to class because I was too upset to even think about him during class so I told my teacher and she said ok come back when you are feeling better and sorry for your cousin. I just hope he can make it because the last thing I remember him saying to me was on sunday when my mom's side of the family got together for mothers day and he said to me that he thinks of me as his big brother and that I am the only one that he talks to on the phone about anything and if he has no parents he want you to be his dad. When he had said that to me I started to cry and I gave him a big hug and said to him i'll always be there for you no matter what happens to you or your family.

Tuesday at 4 pm I just got a call from his parents and they said that they don't know if they should pull the plug because they think he had a fighting chance of coming back to life. The doctors said to them that he only has a 3 percent chance of living if he stays on life support and now the are asking everyone in the family on what they should do. I told them I don't know what to do in this situation.

I just got a call from my 4 year old cousin's parents. They told me that he had just woken up about 10 and that he will still be on life support for a day or 2 to make sure that he is fully able to function on his own. The doctor did an x-ray on him to make sure that he wasn't paralyzed and they found out that he was paralyzed from the waist down which meant that he can no longer be able to use his legs and he has to be in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. The doctors are going to keep a close watch on him to make sure he doesn't pass out because if he does he will not be able to live much longer and will have passed away. I had just spoken to him and he said to me in a very low voice that he misses me and he doesn't want to be in a wheel chair because he will get laughed at. He had also sang to me his favorite little kid song called twinkle twinkle little star and after he sang that I started to cry and I said to him take care and if you need to say something just write it down on paper so that your voice can get alot better. I also told him that I will see you on Friday and be with you the whole weekend. I just hope he doesn't pass out because I don't want him to die. What do I do now because he is now back on life support since he had passed out and is not responding and his birthday is tomorrow. What do I do if he passes away on his birthday and then next year comes and I would want to wish him a happy birthday and then I would realize that I can because he had passed away. How should I handel this situation?

Today I am visiting my 4 year old cousin in the hospital since I couldn't see him all weekend and I know if I don't see him soon he may pass away before I can get a chance to see him. He is back on life support since he had passed out from being off of life support. I know he can't see me but I am sure he can hear me tell me that I miss him and love him and also hopes he can get better soon and even if he has to be in a wheelchair just remember that some people can do alot of different things that other people can't do. I just want him to get wake up soon because tomorrow is his birthday and I want to call him and wish him a happy birthday but if he isn't awake It would be a sad day for me because I won't get to wish him a happy birthday.

I am not sure if there is a legal question in this situation that I can help you with. What to do about your cousin is a matter for the family to decide. I would not ever presume that I would be in any position to even have earned a right to offer input into such a situation. I am very sorry for your family's situation, and I hope he surprises everyone! Maybe your school has a psychologist you can make an appointment with, who can help you deal with this situation. I can tell you are very sad and worried. I am glad you are there for him as much as you can be. You are a good cousin.
