Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am 18 year old and would like to live with and take care of my 12 year old brother for six months while my parents live elsewhere for work related reasons (my dad would be an hour away, my mom would be across the country). I would have their permission and want to do this so that my brother does not have to change schools in the middle of the semester. Is this legal?

Yes, it is perfectly legal. It would be a good idea for you and your parents to make some legal preparations though, such as giving you a health-care power of attorney over your brother so you can make emergency health care decisions for him if necessary. You should also ask the school what documentation they will need to allow you to take care of emergencies. Quite frankly, though, the legal issues are likely to be the least of your worries in all this. Be sure you and your parents and your brother have a clear understanding of everything from budgeting and financial arrangements to child discipline rules and limits. Good luck. I have a 12 yo son myself. He's a good kid but with any 12 yo boy you have your work cut out for you.
