Legal Question in Family Law in California
My 17 year old son
My 17 year old son lives in California with his father who has custody. My son has now decided he wants to live with my 21 year old daughter in Kansas. I live in Missouri, just across state lines from my daughter. Her and her husband live in Overland Park. My daughter has bought a ticket for her brother. I thought his father knew but I now find out he does not know when he is leaving. What right does my son have? I do not want any trouble due to my professional license. My son says dad has agreed to let him come here but he is also afraid when dad finds out he really is going, dad will stop him. I feel caught. What can I do for him and myself?

Re: My 17 year old son
You need to have open communication with the dad. He has a right to make a decision in allowing your son to go live with his sister. If your son just leaves without the dad's knowledge, and the dad wouldn't have allowed it, there can end up being legalfees and costs incurred by all parties.
If there is good reason to have your son move away, and his father disagrees, file an OSC with the court to change custody. I would request minor's counsel so that your son's interests will be represented.
Another option, if dad is opposed, is to simply wait for your son to turn 18.
