Legal Question in Family Law in California

Im 20 years old and a few days ago I was in a altercation where my father ended up repeatedly punching me in the face. Long story short he and my mother are married and we are living together he has cheated in the past but this time brought a women to our home while he had a get together in our back yard. The woman refused to leave and my father who has been abusive in the past became angry that my mother and I were telling the woman to leave which escalated the situation. He was arrested and released the next morning only to return to our home and threaten our lives and be arrested again. My mother and I filled for a restraining order against him. My question is whether I was so supposed to or am I able to press charges against him? The arresting officers never asked whether I wanted to press charges.
