Re: abandonment of a child

In California as I recall for a step-parent adotion requires that the absent parent not have any contact or provide any support for the child for a period of 6 months, the maximum time is 12 month. The absent parent may have incidental contact with the child during the period required for abandonment.

Often the absent parent will be willing to sign a relinquishment of the his or her parental rights, in exchange of not having to pay child support.
