Legal Question in Family Law in California

Adopted father signed birth certificate and later had test to prove that he was

I would like to know if I can legally change my name and if so how I can do so and have my birth certificate amended. When I was born my mother made an agreement with her then boyfriend to adopt me, they never had anything filed in court and when I was 10 Year Old and my mother was on AFDC to avoid child support payments the truth came out through paternity tests ordered by the DA. Needless, to say I was devastated and felt betrayed. I have tried to accept the fact but I don't think I should have to have a man who is not my real father's name on my birth certificate or be forced to carry his name. I think that the truth should be faced and I would like to have my mother's maiden name which is what I wouldve had to begin with if this whole charade would have never happened. What are my options, I feel like I am living a lie and I would like my birth certificate to reflect the truth. Thank You

you are free to start using any name you want but if you want it official you can file a petition to change you name with the court.
