Legal Question in Family Law in California

Do I get myself adopted or petition for a name change?

I am 25 years old and I was raised by my mom & stepdad. All of my family goes by his last name, ''Jackson;'' but legally my surname is still my mom's maiden name. I am getting married soon and I would like for both of us to have the family name ''Jackson.'' So what is the best way to get my name changed to Jackson? Should I get my stepdad to legally adopt me, or should I just petition for a name change?

Each process while changeing your last name have different results. Adoption results in you becoming an child of your step father and entitled to a portion of his estate upon his death. A petition to change your name would result in only a change in your last name.

The best way to do it depends upon the result which you wish to accomplish.
