adoption and child support

I want to adopt my step-child, if I do will the father have to keep paying child support or once i adopt will be be relieved of his payment duty? right now there is no court order for him to pay

Once you adopt a child you become the parent of that child and the biological parent is relieved from any duty to the child and the child loses any right to inherit from the biological parent.

By adopting the child, you will terminate the bio father's rights and duties pertaining to the child. So, he will not have to pay child support.
