Legal Question in Family Law in California
At what age does a minor child need their own room? We spoke to a judge and he said in the state of California it is 5. Here is the situation, the father has a 2 bedroom apartment and provides a room for the minor child, which is going to be 5 in January. He has 50-50 custody of the minor child with the mother, whom of which lives with her parents. She has a 15 year old daughter as well. The son, who is shared week to week with the parents does not have his own room with his mother, but does with the father. Where in the law books does it say that he needs his own room at 5, so if it goes back to court the father can show he knows what he is talking about or if it is not stated in the law books he does not go back to court and look like an idiot or a vindictive parent?

There is no law that expressly states the age at 5. The guidance you seek is in the rule that requires that the court on a case by case basis ascertain what is in the child's best interests. Reasonable sleeping accommodations should be made for each child especially if that child spends significant time in each parents household.
This is purely a judgment and maybe even a cultural issue. This is not a legal issue at all. Each child and their family situation is different.
