Legal Question in Family Law in California
Is there a certain age a sibling has to be to babysit in california? My son is turning 4 in april and I was wondering if I would be able to leave them for about a couple hours twice a week with my daughter who is 11. Itd be during the time when I need to leave for work and before my husband comes home. Shes very responsible so I trust her and as extra assurance, Im enrolling us in a CPR/first aid/babysitting class. I just dont want to break any laws! Thanks!

I am not aware of any specific legal age, but generally 12 - 13 years of age is a good general commonsense guideline. The child needs to be able to properly care for the younger child and be able to get both herself and the other child out of danger if necessary. The more critical issue is whether the child who is providing care services is old enough to maintain her focus on her responsibilities for the younger child. While it may cost you something in babysitting expenses, having an adult or somewhat older child, in your home during these times would be a wiser course of action.
