Alimony to an alcoholic?

My wife was laid off from her job 2 years ago and began drinking. She does not feel she has a problem and does not look for work. I am filing divorce papers and want to know if I have to pay alimony to her. She worked through out the 20 year marrage and our home has over 300k equity to divide.

After a 20 year marriage it is almost certain that you will have to pay some alimony. You could request a court order for her to seek employment. Paying for her to go through an alcohol program may save you much more than its cost in future alimony payments. Her ability to earn will have some affect on the amount of alimony you have to pay.
