how long does my ex husband have to pay me alimony for we were married for 16 yrs

There is no time limit, it's discretionary with the judge. In marriages of less than 10 years, the court is guided by the standard of 1/2 the length of the marriage, so if spousal support is appropriate because of disparity in income/income earning capacity and/or assets, you can expect it wouldn't be less than 8 years.
