Legal Question in Family Law in California

Alimony

I was married for 17 years and 7 months. I've had a few part time jobs, but never pursued a career because we moved a lot. How long will my husband have to pay me alimony? I am 47 years old.

Nobody can answer that question. It wont be long before he's putting some pressure on you to start working. If you have the opportunity and ability to work, but don't, the court could in theory eliminate support. It's to make attempts to become self supporting.

Re: Alimony

In CA, spousal support for a spouse with a long term marriage (ten or more years) can be awarded for the rest of the recipient's life or until she or he remarries. But CA family law also favors adults becoming self supporting, and the amount and length of support depends on a number of statutory factors that the court must weigh and balance according to evidence presented if your case goes to trial. You should have your case assessed by a family law attorney.
